Mark Erlich is discussing with Bangladeshi delegation the next steps in implementing national single identity in Bangladesh

Bangladesh looks to Estonia’s digital state to advance national single identity and interoperability

As Bangladesh moves towards implementing a national single identity and interoperability across government institutions, the country is seeking international best practices. From 6–9 July, senior government officials from Bangladesh visited Estonia to explore how trusted national digital identity, secure data exchange, and interoperability have transformed public service delivery. The four-day study visit was organised as part of the “E-ffective e-governance” project, supported by the European Union through the Global Gateway initiative.

During the visit, the delegation, led by Advisors to the Prime Minister, Mr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Mr Rehan Asad, and the Governor of the Bangladesh Bank Mr. Md Mostaqur Rahman, met experts from the Ministry of the Interior, the Information System Authority, the Ministry of Finance, the Tax and Customs Board, and SK ID Solutions to explore how Estonia’s digital ecosystem was built, what lessons have been learned over the years, and how these experiences could support Bangladesh’s digital transformation.

Together with e-Governance Academy experts and project team lead Piret Kuhlbars, our Bangladeshi partners also reviewed the progress of e-governance activities under the project, including Bangladesh’s secure data exchange platform NRDEX, which is based on the Estonian X-Road solution, and discussed the next steps towards institutionalising interoperability and introducing a national single identity.

For Bangladesh, implementing a trusted national single identity and secure data exchange will be a major step towards making public services more accessible, efficient and secure for citizens, businesses and public institutions.

Through the European Union-supported “E-ffective e-Governance” project, eGA and British Council support the Government of Bangladesh in modernising public administration by integrating digital processes, strengthening institutional capacity and improving the quality and accessibility of public services.
