Hannes Astok honored with Cross of Merit for advancing Estonia’s digital reputation
Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna awarded Hannes Astok, Director and Chairman of the Board of the e-Governance Academy, the Order of Merit, Third Class, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Estonia’s international reputation as a digital state. The award was presented during the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 106th-anniversary celebration.
In his speech, Minister Tsahkna emphasised the critical role of Estonia’s foreign service in advocating for freedom and statehood. “We must fight for freedom, and not just in this neighbourhood, but all around the world,” Tsahkna said. Highlighting the achievements of awardees like Hannes Astok, he noted that their efforts ensure Estonia remains seen and heard on the global stage.
Hannes Astok expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasising the collective effort behind Estonia’s digital success. “This award is a great honour, and I believe this recognition belongs to the entire e-Governance Academy team for their dedicated work over the past 22 years,” Astok said. “Their tireless work and dedication to supporting digital governance and sharing Estonia’s experience globally make achievements like this possible. It’s truly a team effort.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs awarded a total of 21 Crosses of Merit this year to individuals who have significantly contributed to Estonia’s foreign service and international cooperation.
